Hand drawn drafts for digipak

These are the drafts for our digipak and album advertisement. The front cover of our digipak will feature our artist facing the camera however she will be looking into the distance, the back cover will have overlapping polaroid photos and will have the names of the 10 songs from the album as well as the name of the production company 'Caroline Records'. The CD will be made to look like a polaroid camera which then links with the back cover. For the rest of the panels we will have photos that relate to themes present in our music video, for example the swings we will try to make it look like the swing is moving by taking several shots from a variety of angles. We also use the wave projector machine again to produce the waves which again links in with our water theme. For the last panel it will be our artist standing by a bench alone, these all relate to our music video as it emphasises her being isolated. The name of our album is 'Exposure' this links in with the photography theme.

For our album advertisement we will have our artist standing frontwards, holding a polaroid camera. This links in with our digipak.

Second Draft.

This is the second draft of our music video. We were successful at filling in the gaps where we needed more footage and adding the black and white effect to the scenes where Robin is in the present day and by herself. We were also successful with adding other effects such as dissolves and fade out to smoothy transition between different scenes. We continued to think carefully about our mise en scene by thinking of what part of our locations to film at and what the artists are wearing, for example clothes like jeans and denim jackets that relate to the target audience.

We were also given feedback on our second draft which commented on use of mise en scene. We included a split screen where Robin and her boyfriend are lip synching at different locations to symbolise how they are no longer together, however as this was our only split screen throughout the entire video we were told it would look random and we would either need more of it or to get rid of it. In the end we decided to create another superimposition which features more than once in our video. Another thing we needed to improve on was the clip reversal which needed to cut to the beat.

All these improvements needed to be done for our final deadline.

Editing Session 8

For our eighth editing session we made some finishing touches to our music video by adding in our final location, the aquarium. These feature Robin alone as well as her with her boyfriend. We also added another cross fade so her boyfriend disappears which symbolises they are no longer together.

We also spent time making sure that there were no more gaps by adding in extra footage we hadn't used, so everything was ready by our second deadline. This was successful as we filmed at all our locations and we could finally fill up all the spaces.

Editing Session 7

For the seventh editing session we experimented with a technique referred to as 'speedy eyes'. We filmed them both looking around the camera and then during post production we sped it up and superimposed both shots. We then decided that this did not fit with our video and we cut it out.

We also continued to fill in the blanks with the extra footage we had from the London filming sessions, we still needed to film at the aquarium therefore some blanks were not filled. This was all to get ready for our second draft which is due in Tuesday 6th.

Music Video First Draft

This is our first draft of our music video. We believe that we were successful with lighting, especially with the wave projector shots as they reflect the words from the song and the water imagery used. We were also successful at filming at most of our locations and using them creatively, for example when we filmed in London we used a lot of the space and different angles. We were also successful with mise en scene, making sure that the costumes were different when appropriate and using different parts of the locations, not just staying in one place. We were able to add some effects to our video where appropriate, such as the reverse when she is walking and when he is rolling the bowling ball. This was to make things more interesting and appeal to the indie genre. We were also successful with targeting our audience, this has been done with the costume which is easily relatable and suits the genre.

To improve our music video we need to film more in order to fill up the video and get rid of the blanks. We need to add more effects such as reverse, slow motion and changing the colour like we agreed to do. We need to experiment more with our camerawork, mise en scene and editing in order to make it more creative and interesting.

Editing Session 3

For our third editing session we continued to line up the lip synching shots with the music and add the latest footage we had filmed, before the lesson. We also added effects such as clip reverse to certain parts of the video, an example can be seen below.

Everything went as planned and we were able to add the effects as discussed when we were planning. As we have not filmed at all our locations we were not able to edit everything and we have a few gaps. Next time we will need to film as much as we can, so we can edit more in our next session.

Filming Session 2&3

For our second filming session we filmed the bath scene. The mise en scene went as we planned for this shot, we used a bath bomb and the heads of flowers to give off an indie aesthetic feel. The shot was pretty successful as we framed it well and had good focus.

Our third filming session consisted of filming in the dark drama room, in order to create silhouettes. We originally planned for the silhouettes to be lighter, therefore we will have to experiment more creatively with the lights so it's light enough to see her face but the background is still dark.

We also experimented with the wave projector, a dark room was not available at the time therefore we were left to use a normal classroom. The waves were therefore not as prominent and did not stand out as much as we would like. We will have to make sure a dark drama room is free the next time we would like to use the projector.

For our next filming session we will be focusing on the mirror shot and the extreme close up the start, both will feature the artist lip synching.

Filming Session 1.

The first location we filmed at was London. We originally planned to film at the Sea Life Aquarium, however due to it closing early we decided to film on the London eye as well as around London. We were able to get shots of Robin and Luca on the London eye and around London, making sure to catch landmarks such as 'The Shard' and 'Big Ben'.
Instead of filming at the Sea Life Aquarium we plan to find an aquarium that is closer by.

This session didn't go as we planned, some of our shots were shaky so we will need to return on a different day to re-shoot them. However we were still able to get shots of the artist and her boyfriend walking around. Our next filming session will be focusing on the shots in the bath.

Song Permission.

Talent Release Forms.

These forms were signed by our group (the producers) and the talents that will appear in the video. These therefore show that we have their permission to film them and use that footage to create our music video.

Monday 17 October 2016

Location Permissions.

This shows an email our group sent to Empire Cinema asking if we could film there, as it is one of our locations.

This is application we needed to fill in order to be granted permission to film in the aquarium.

These forms are important as it shows that we can legally film there.

Props.

This presentation lists the props that we will be using in our music video, such as bubbles, bath bombs, flowers and a skate board. These will all be used at certain locations throughout our music video and will create a more indie aesthetic.

Shooting Schedule.

This is our shooting schedule, it has the dates of when we're supposed to film and what shots we plan to film. It also has information of who we're filming and what they will be wearing in that particular shot. The equipment that we will need to use is listed as well as the crew and the issues that may come about and how to avoid them.

Animatic

This our animatic that we created, it shows all the shots and our ideas that we have for our music video. We will show this during our pitch and hopefully get some feedback on our plan.

Pitch

Feedback:

We received feedback after we delivered our pitch, for one of test shots we had Robyn standing in a dark room with a tiny light behind her to create a silhouette, it wasn't as bright as we hoped however we were directed to try use more lights in order to make the silhouette more defined and so you can see more than just the back of head. This will be something we experiment with when we begin filming.

Our animatic shows that we have quite a few split screen shots of both Robyn and her boyfriend lip synching in different locations. In order to be more creative we were told to challenge the conventional straight line and maybe consider using a horizontal split screen, this could help our video to be more interesting and different.

One of the locations in our music video is a park and one of shots is Robyn and her boyfriend on a swing set we then cut to her alone. Again to be more creative and highlight that she is reminiscing and revisiting these past places, we could experiment with jump cutting for example when they are both swinging together, it could suddenly cut to her still swinging but this time she is alone. This creates clarity as it is more obvious she is remembering.

We plan to include a mirror shot when Robyn is singing into the mirror and the camera is behind her, to help relate to our target audience more we were instructed to experiment with mise en scene and possibly decorate around the mirror with photos of herself and friends and her boyfriend. This would therefore make it more pleasing and beautiful and the target audience will be able to relate more as they see her as just an ordinary girl who has gone through a break up.

Concept Development

Reasons:

We chose our story line to based around a girl visiting the places she went with her boyfriend as we wanted to a small narrative, however we didn't want it to be prominent. As we chose to also flash back when she is at the certain locations, we wanted to be different and wanted an interesting idea therefore we decided to show the flashblacks in colour and the present time in black and white. This will therefore help to differentiate between the different times.

For our props we chose to use items that are significant to the artist to show they have meaning and are of high importance to her. They are also able to be linked with the locations, for example we have a skate board at the skate park they use to go to, we also have photos of the two together these will be viewed in the comfort of her own home where she can be sentimental and sad.

The costumes we chose for the artists to wear are easily relatable for the target audience as they are generic and simple. We chose for them to be relatable as it can help them to sympathise and also picture themselves as the artist. Some of the costumes we have chosen include; ripped jeans, trainers, flannel shirts, bomber jackets and leather jackets.

The locations we have chosen again are also significant to the artists as they are places she visited with her boyfriend. We decided to do this so we could show them together and then Robyn on her own. We also chose places they visited to show she is remembering. For example, the park, skate park, the aquarium, cafe, cinema.

For special effects we chose to use split screen, to show that they are no longer together it will also show them in different locations this will also highlight the fact they have broken up. Another special effect we decided to include is super imposition to link two different scenes and objects, in this case Robyn and Luca as they will both be lip synching. We will also be using black and white for the present time and colour for the flash backs- again this will help differentiate between the two different times. We made these decisions to be more experimental and creative, this is common of indie pop music videos as they tend to be alternative and experimental.

Roles

I have been chosen to be in charge of Mise en scene for our music video, therefore I need to make sure the costume and props are in the appropriate shots and are the best quality.

Sophie has been chosen to be the director as well as in charge of lighting, therefore she will decide whether we will use high key or low key or chiascuro lighting in each shot and she always decides what she wants Ciara to do in each scene.

Mica has been chosen to be in charge of the camera and editing, this is because her editing skills are much stronger.

Ciara has been chosen to be the performer for the music video, she was the most confident and willing to be apart of the video and will play a very convincing.

We are all well suited for our roles and believe this will help us to achieve the highest grade possible.

Annotation of Lyrics

The visual ideas we got from the lyrics include images of the performer walking alone as she reminisces.

Our ideas follow Goodwin's Amplification idea, this is because the video is not entirely visual and doesn't reflect the lyrics. However, it does follow a small narrative as the performer makes her way to the places her and her boyfriend went.

The overall feel of our music video is addressing isolation as she visits these places but how she is not really alone because she has these memories that she can keep with her forever and always come back to them, even though she is no longer with her boyfriend. We wanted be creative and different by making the scenes where she is visiting the places in black and white and then leaving the flashbacks in colour. This therefore highlights to the audience that she is no longer with her boyfriend and is remembering.

Chosen Song.

We have chosen the song 'Shark'by 'Oh Wonder' who are a British Indie Pop band. We have chosen this song because it fits the Indie genre, which is our chosen genre. It has also allowed us to form a simple storyline from the lyrics and the feel of the song. Some of our ideas include:
  • A girl reminiscing as she visits the places her and her lover used to go
  • Using a lot of water imagery show that the love she has for this person is very suffocating and dangerous.

Low Budget Music Videos

Just Got Paid

This is a low budget music video has been made to look like it has a high production budget, this has been achieved by mise en scene, editing and camerawork.

Mise en scene
Their costume is used to make the video look like it has a high production budget as they are all wearing suits which look expensive and shows wealth.
One of the locations is at a big house which looks expensive, this can be shown through the chandelier that can be seen hanging behind them and the elegant furniture. The other location used is the dark room with the spotlights, this is where they perform most of their dancing. It is conventional to have more than one location in music video
The lighting used also makes the video look like it has a high production budget, for example at the start of the video the spotlights come on one by one, outlining their bodies.

Editing
The music video has been edited to the beat as in time, this is common of music videos and makes it look like it has a high production value. This is because it makes it more continous.
It cuts from the different locations, the house and the hall, it also cuts between each person singing this is common of music videos therefore making it seem like it has a high budget.

Camerawork
The camerawork used to make the video seem as if it had a high budget includes the over shoulder shots when they are getting ready and looking in the mirror

Close ups are used when focusing on each member, this also makes it look like it had a high budget because it is typical of common music videos.
The use of long shots also makes it seem as if it is has high production this is because it shows the entire location and surroundings, as well as the entire frame of the artists. Therefore the audience is able to see their costumes which look expensive and elegant.

A-ha!

This video is also low budget but is made to look as if it had a higher budget, this has been achieved using the same elements.

Editing
Fast paced editing is used in the video to create a disoriented feel, it also makes it look like it had higher budget as it is all edited to the beat and is in time. This is common for music videos when it is done professionally.
Superimposition has also been used as it transitions to the next shot, this again makes it looks like it had a high budget as it looks professional and creates a hectic feel.

Camerawork
A variety of camera shots have been used to make the video disturbing and eerie, this also makes the video look as if it had a high budget because it looks well planned and suggests a lot of work has gone into post production.

A long shot was used at the start of the video, this allows the viewer to see the location and get a feeling of what sort of genre the song is.

Mise en scene
The video uses low key lighting which creates a dark and sinister feel, the video does not use a proper location which suggests green screen. This therefore makes it look like it had a high production budget as it was well thought out and looks professional.
Chiascuro lighting has also been used to create shadows and again to create a creepy feel for the audience, this therefore makes the video look as if it received a high budget because it looks as though they received professional help to try get the best angles and lighting to get the right atmosphere.

My ideas
To make my video look as if it has a high production budget I will try to film in a location which looks expensive and elegant, in order to be more professional.
I will make sure the lighting fits the genre and will try to experiment with it, for example at the start of 'Just Got Paid' they are creative in the way they use the lighting as it enters one by one.
I will make sure the editing cuts to the beat and is in time so it creates a continuous. I will also experiment with different camera shots in order to create variety but to also make it more exciting.
